In colonial New South Wales fire fighting was undertaken by volunteer brigades whose ability to respond to fires would vary.In 1884 the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (the precursor to the New South Wales Fire Brigade) was formed in Sydney Australia.This helmet is a fine example of the protective headgear provided to firemen in the NSW Brigade. The Fireman Helmet, New South Wales Fire Brigade is made from brass. It has a short peak at the front and a deeper rim at the back. Includes the Brass chain strap.
